trilobites??
WTF are those things!????
They’re giant isopods, and this is a classic pictures.
And that was awful grammars. *picture
@Mera
Damn. Beat me to it. Never seen or heard of them before, but it didn’t take too long to figure it out after a search for largest arthropods.
they look like those aliens in star ship troopers, the ones that carry the brain bug…
Ho my god. Thank you, I’ve been sick all day.. This didn’t exactly make things better
I think… they’re kind of cute :O
They really are!
I want to pet these creatures.
TRILOBITES!!! Are they delicious?
@margie barge
Only when cooked with a crisp coating of crushed Doitos.
Gah, I am an excellent typist. *Doritos
lol
Mama Isopod shares her bounty with her young!
Doritos: Bringing you back form extinction.
omg. where did you find these things so that i know where i can never EVER go.
Those things are soooooooo creepy. They looks as though they should be about a 10th of that size
Of course.
Creatures with exoskeletons can’t grow that huge on Earth unless they live in the ocean
….which the giant isopod does
“WE REQUIRE MORE MINERALS!”
god i totally lol’d thank you for reading my mind
“Doritos: Or else we’ll send in the frakkin isopods.”
I love these things – they are found in deep ocean water, and in some country’s on seafood restaurant menus!
And they are probably alive in this picture, so WTF to how three of them ended up inside a house!
Uh, boat, that floor is clearly boat flooring. Maybe they make good guard isopods, watching their master’s Doritos… yes, watching…
They’re so cute, I want one. *points at doritos* Oh and that *lifts Isopod* If you bite my finger I’m gonna be pissed.
AHHHH…disembodied walking lobster tails!! Quick someone get me a large pot, some white wine and a stove!
I searched for these things on Google images, and on some pictures they are on land.. Can isopods live in water AND on land??
And now a joke!:
Isopods: we can haz doritos?
Erm…don’t you mean the cockroach-esque thing from Men in Black?
they look like huge cockroaches…blech!
OMG!!! Ewwwwwwww!! Someone owes me a new lunch now!!!! LOL LOL LMAO
Oh my…. i can’t decide if i’m more disgusted, horrified, or slightly hungrier…..
scary as hell from underneath.. http://tinyurl.com/isopod
Why would you make me look at that from the bottom? Why?
Zerg queen wantz ur dorito’s
they’re adorable :3
unless… they sting or something
Fried isopod with beer… mmmm…
LMAO. That’s all I can say besides WTF.
@maria
SCARY
YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS
Don’t you mean: SPAWN MOAR OVERLORDS!
But if you don’t let the larvae have their Doritos now, they’re gonna be pissed and hungry when they’re done mutating into Hydralisks. And nobody likes being around hungry hungry hydras.
I’ll never eat doritos again
every time i see this, i want to shout “trilobites!!”
Do these things like crawl into your home or are they some kind of fucked up pet?
They’re not just fucked up pets, they’re AWESOME fucked up pets!
Yeah isopods can live on land and water, and there are many different types of them. I think only small ones live on the land though, although I might be wrong. If you’ve seen wood lice before (also called pill bugs or sow bugs), these are actually isopods (and isopods are NOT insect, but are actually crustaceans). Pretty cool huh! Although they’re harmless (as far as I know), these big ones do freak me out a little..!
They actually have strong jaws and can eat through very hard substances, I’d still like to have one as a pet though
@Ombor
Well done!
It still doesn’t alter the fact that they are pig-ugly AND scarey!
oh holy hell…the “cuteness” factor soon ended when i google-imaged the giant isopod. enjoy. http://www.perhapanauts.com/blog/uploaded_images/GiantIsopod-764949.jpg
and no, that’s not photoshopped, more than a few images had the weird silvery eyes like that…
*shudder*
omg… i just looked at that pictured and couldn’t do anything but just stare at it. Sooooo creepy. I can’t believe that’s real. I feel unsafe. lol
Feed my minions FEED
@m@tt
The icy stare of the enemy. Eeek
man, i thought those were either extinct, or at least not that big.
thinggies, read the bag, thats NAT-CHO CHEESE!
sick!!! lawlsauce! still sick!!
YOW!!!! THOSE ARE THE MOST FREAKING AWESOME THINGS EVER!!!!! That’s official new favorite crustacean. The little leggies are so cute!!! Just imagine one crawl ONto you!!! XD It’d feel like a giant rolie-polie!!!!!!! >.< THANKS FOR THE PIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Though I must admit that I am wondering what they taste like… I want one as a pet too!!!
Good by lemming, say HELLO to Isopod-MANIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YAH!! My spells is good too!!! Meant ‘That’s officialLY MY’
looks like the tails ran away from the rest of the lobsters bodies in favor of delicious snacks
Your snacks have not been stolen by aliens, but kabutos.
My thoughts exactly, Kabuto from pokemon.
Lolololol. Those are soo cool, once the scholastic catalog came and they had a kit that would allow you to grow them.. I wanted it sooo bad but my mom said no D:
I bought those directly from the catalog, It wasn’t worth ist
@Jessi
i doubt u could actually grow these. could u be thinking of sea monkeys? which are actually dried brine shrimp.
Brine shrimp eggs, not dried brine shrimp, I use to raise them to feed to my fish. Put the eggs in salt water and they hatch; the fish loved them.
they’re like big sea cockroaches…eech!
This makes sense, a bunch of cockroaches eating Doritos.
They had these on the menu in Nicaragua, someone at my table got them, but i didn’t try them. I’m glad I didn’t know what they were until now!
@m@tt
It looks evil…..
Trilobites are extinct but these are definitely related to them, whatever they are.
Has nobody here even heard of a giant isopod?
@tigress170
Yeah, that’s sea monkeys you’re thinking of.
Mmm…Popplers…
Wow!! What exactly are Giant Isopods? Are they pets? Wood lice that got into miracle grow? They look like lobster tails that escaped the dinner plate full of butter!
Whats this? A wild gang of Kabutos? Quick, some one throw a pokeball while they’re eating!
These look like walking lobster tails. Are they just as yummy with drawn butter??
WTF is a “rolie-polie”????
“Rolie-polie” is a common nickname in some parts of the USA for woodlice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlouse (includes list of common names and other fun louse-y facts, and we all know how much fun woodlice are).
The are neither bugs nor insects, as someone else pointed out, but are crustaceans like shrimp, lobsters, and the giant isopods pictured here.
Although it is well-known that woodlice are detritivores, in my research for this posting I was unable to find any statistically relevant data on roly-poly taste preferences with regards to Doritos.
Doritos seem to be wood chips
Doritos is from Brazil!
if that isn’t the image of the scariest fucking nightmare ever to have ever been ever even thought…then i don’t know what is…..holy hell I want my mommy!!!!!!!
Gawd, I wanna look at this pic but I don’t want nightmares, what to do oh what to do
And now you know where they got their inspiration for several of the aliens in the sci-fi genre.
@lala
Holy Crap! I was not expecting THAT!!!!!
@Tindy
Best response E-V-A-R!!!!
i’m pretty sure they are giant sea lice. Closely related to wood lice and pill bugs. I dont understand how you can saw they are cute. To me they epitomize evil lol.
@lala
aaahhhhh!! You are so right about scary. My retinas are fried now! I’m gonna sleep with the lights on now! That thing is real, too. eek!!
@maria
holy shit that is disgusting o.O
if i found that in my house i would probably drown it in my vomit >.>
@maria
Oh god… Im scarred for life…. Hey! Where did my Doritos go?
Can’t decide if they’re cute or wierd. I had some little ones once (Called Triops) They were like sea monkeys but one got pretty big (Size of 10p piece) and ate the others…
I remember this kid at school dropped him and picked them up *shudder*
Also that underneath picture is exremely scary
Starcraft probes getting minerals!
Ewww those things look digusting
@maria
That’s the stuff of nightmares *shudder*
… i think i shat myself…
i must say, your blog is very good, i will be checking back to read more
Reminds me of this:
http://www.flyculture.net/searchquick-submit.sc?keywords=isokit
Ummm… these look like horseshoe crabs which are not extinct. Trilobites are in fact extinct but may be ancestors of these guys. I think they’re cute and I say Pffbbhht to whoever took them out of the ocean.
@idaholady
Not to be *that* person, but these look nothing like horseshoe crabs. They are indeed giant isopods, some places call them sea cockroaches.. etc etc
@tigress170
Ohai… well i am not a biologist (degree is in anthropology) so i will accept your word on it. Now i will go back to my collection of trilobite fossils and apologize to them. Amazing, the fossils came from the Mojave Desert. Iz funny world, yes?
i think they are cute, even from underneath. oh, and i recently got some triops, but i haven’t set them up… ah well, i’m gonna get them up and running in the little tank today. and they are cute too. i think the giant species of isopod is a partially or completely amphibious species. they would make FUN pets to scare the crap out of people! >:)
OH MY GOD. that is so funny!!! i love doritos…
They came from the bag of Doritos, took one look around, and headed back…
You mean like in the episode of futurama where leela found these delicious little snacks, which could talk after a week and called her mommy?
fuckin trilobites dude…..fuckin trilobites.
@lala
omg. that’s exactly what i was thinking. i’m going to go have some nightmares now… for the rest of my life. mommy? save me!
WTF I am now afraid of what ever the hell those things are.
looking at this at 12:30AM was probably a bad idea. still those thing have a strange ix of cute and freaky that is encountered strangely often.
call the people from primeval, a trio of trilobites is tealng my doritos
see it walking here….ewwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5lrbcLX_rw
guys we all seemed to miss that the info on the caption said “Independence day”- err actually the picture is more like Men in Black and I think that they are going to hatch into ultralisks
Plus Triops Rule they will eat each other ALIVE!
I know when they eat they always say
“MOAR”
Attack of the Giant Isopodes
In 3-D
Bathynomus sp. FTW!
Isopod Video
Weee! Giant Isopods! Did you know that isopods – or any other creatures for that matter – grow to be that size only because of the cold water and unbelievable pressure? They do! That’s also how squids get so giant.
As mentioned several times before, they’re not insects, but crustaceans like lobsters, crabs, and woodlice. They are in no way related to horse-shoe crabs, which are in fact more arachnid than crustacean.
*sigh* I just ADORE their eyes…..
TRILOBITES ARE EXTINCT!!! I saw a show on animal planet about these things, they’re basicly giant pill bugs
whats up, I haven’t much spoken to you on the icq in a while, but I reckoned I might email you from my completely new Notebook!! No joke, I work for a top company these days in the revision dept.
