  15. Ha says:

    Those things are soooooooo creepy. They looks as though they should be about a 10th of that size

    • Camui says:

      Of course.
      Creatures with exoskeletons can’t grow that huge on Earth unless they live in the ocean
      ….which the giant isopod does :)

  16. Scruffy says:

    “WE REQUIRE MORE MINERALS!”

  17. Fred says:

    “Doritos: Or else we’ll send in the frakkin isopods.”

  18. Naktarr says:

    I love these things – they are found in deep ocean water, and in some country’s on seafood restaurant menus!
    And they are probably alive in this picture, so WTF to how three of them ended up inside a house!

  19. Naktarr says:

    Uh, boat, that floor is clearly boat flooring. Maybe they make good guard isopods, watching their master’s Doritos… yes, watching…

  20. God Paradox says:

    They’re so cute, I want one. *points at doritos* Oh and that *lifts Isopod* If you bite my finger I’m gonna be pissed.

      But if you don’t let the larvae have their Doritos now, they’re gonna be pissed and hungry when they’re done mutating into Hydralisks. And nobody likes being around hungry hungry hydras.

  32. CrisInuyasha says:

    I’ll never eat doritos again

  33. Edison says:

    every time i see this, i want to shout “trilobites!!”

  34. Captain says:

    Do these things like crawl into your home or are they some kind of fucked up pet?

  35. Tindy says:

    They’re not just fucked up pets, they’re AWESOME fucked up pets! :D

  36. Ombor says:

    Yeah isopods can live on land and water, and there are many different types of them. I think only small ones live on the land though, although I might be wrong. If you’ve seen wood lice before (also called pill bugs or sow bugs), these are actually isopods (and isopods are NOT insect, but are actually crustaceans). Pretty cool huh! Although they’re harmless (as far as I know), these big ones do freak me out a little..!

    • Monkey571 says:

      They actually have strong jaws and can eat through very hard substances, I’d still like to have one as a pet though

  37. skroys says:

    @Ombor
    Well done!
    It still doesn’t alter the fact that they are pig-ugly AND scarey!

  38. m@tt says:

    oh holy hell…the “cuteness” factor soon ended when i google-imaged the giant isopod. enjoy. http://www.perhapanauts.com/blog/uploaded_images/GiantIsopod-764949.jpg

    and no, that’s not photoshopped, more than a few images had the weird silvery eyes like that…

    *shudder*

    • chelmoe says:

      omg… i just looked at that pictured and couldn’t do anything but just stare at it. Sooooo creepy. I can’t believe that’s real. I feel unsafe. lol

  39. libby says:

  40. Pynchon says:

  41. Penis says:

    man, i thought those were either extinct, or at least not that big.

    thinggies, read the bag, thats NAT-CHO CHEESE!

  46. t3hpython says:

    Your snacks have not been stolen by aliens, but kabutos.

  47. Jessi says:

    Lolololol. Those are soo cool, once the scholastic catalog came and they had a kit that would allow you to grow them.. I wanted it sooo bad but my mom said no D:

  48. debus says:

    @Jessi
    i doubt u could actually grow these. could u be thinking of sea monkeys? which are actually dried brine shrimp.

    • Bear666 says:

      Brine shrimp eggs, not dried brine shrimp, I use to raise them to feed to my fish. Put the eggs in salt water and they hatch; the fish loved them.

  49. Tinkle says:

    they’re like big sea cockroaches…eech!

  50. monmoc says:

    This makes sense, a bunch of cockroaches eating Doritos.

  51. tigress170 says:

    They had these on the menu in Nicaragua, someone at my table got them, but i didn’t try them. I’m glad I didn’t know what they were until now!

  52. Waffles says:

    @m@tt

    It looks evil…..

  53. hteb says:

    Trilobites are extinct but these are definitely related to them, whatever they are.

  54. Fabius Maximus says:

    Has nobody here even heard of a giant isopod?

  55. Fabius Maximus says:

    @tigress170

    Yeah, that’s sea monkeys you’re thinking of.

  56. Bridget says:

    Mmm…Popplers…

  57. Bluebonnet says:

    Wow!! What exactly are Giant Isopods? Are they pets? Wood lice that got into miracle grow? They look like lobster tails that escaped the dinner plate full of butter!

  58. whatsthisdo? says:

    Whats this? A wild gang of Kabutos? Quick, some one throw a pokeball while they’re eating!

  59. Tania says:

    These look like walking lobster tails. Are they just as yummy with drawn butter?? ;)

  60. Tania says:

    WTF is a “rolie-polie”????

  61. lolsuz says:

    “Rolie-polie” is a common nickname in some parts of the USA for woodlice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlouse (includes list of common names and other fun louse-y facts, and we all know how much fun woodlice are).

    The are neither bugs nor insects, as someone else pointed out, but are crustaceans like shrimp, lobsters, and the giant isopods pictured here.

    Although it is well-known that woodlice are detritivores, in my research for this posting I was unable to find any statistically relevant data on roly-poly taste preferences with regards to Doritos.

  62. Benzadeus says:

    Doritos is from Brazil!

  63. lala says:

    m@tt :oh holy hell…the “cuteness” factor soon ended when i google-imaged the giant isopod. enjoy. http://www.perhapanauts.com/blog/uploaded_images/GiantIsopod-764949.jpg
    and no, that’s not photoshopped, more than a few images had the weird silvery eyes like that…

  67. Bluebonnet says:

  78. tigress170 says:

    @idaholady
    Not to be *that* person, but these look nothing like horseshoe crabs. They are indeed giant isopods, some places call them sea cockroaches.. etc etc

  79. idaholady says:

    @tigress170

    Ohai… well i am not a biologist (degree is in anthropology) so i will accept your word on it. Now i will go back to my collection of trilobite fossils and apologize to them. Amazing, the fossils came from the Mojave Desert. Iz funny world, yes?

  80. pyromancerfusion says:

    i think they are cute, even from underneath. oh, and i recently got some triops, but i haven’t set them up… ah well, i’m gonna get them up and running in the little tank today. and they are cute too. i think the giant species of isopod is a partially or completely amphibious species. they would make FUN pets to scare the crap out of people! >:)

    Isopod Video

  92. Fire-glass Dragon says:

    Weee! Giant Isopods! Did you know that isopods – or any other creatures for that matter – grow to be that size only because of the cold water and unbelievable pressure? They do! That’s also how squids get so giant.

    As mentioned several times before, they’re not insects, but crustaceans like lobsters, crabs, and woodlice. They are in no way related to horse-shoe crabs, which are in fact more arachnid than crustacean.

    *sigh* I just ADORE their eyes…..

  93. Monkey571 says:

    TRILOBITES ARE EXTINCT!!! I saw a show on animal planet about these things, they’re basicly giant pill bugs
