Moonshine will NOT blind you unless it is spiked with unsavory substances. The myth came from when moonshiners would add extra chemicals such as anti freeze and gasoline to increase the content of their liquor, and those were the things that would blind you. Very rarely will acetone or methanol (the heads and tails) hurt you for two reasons. One, when you distill, you wait until the heads are gone before you start collecting. You can tell by the powerful smell. You also stop when the tails begin. Two, you probably can’t stand the horrifying taste and odor of acetone and methanol to begin with.

Also, some guy said ‘my friend is fermenting moonshine in his basement.’ This is false. First you ferment the beer/wine (which is legal in the United States) and then you distill it (a type of ulta slow boil) which IS illegal.

Another myth: Stills explode. This is false. No still will ever explode, because it never contains pressure of any kind. It’s completely open to the outside air pressure.

Myth: You can distill your own alcohol to run in your E80 car. Actually, this is completely true. You can even use the heads and tails and add them to the regular gasoline. However, ethanol, once touted as the great solution to the (greatly exaggerated) energy crisis, is perfectly soluble with water, which can cause great damage to your engine, reduce your fuel efficiency and end up costing you much more in the end.

Anyway, I hope everyone feels a little more educated.

I’m in NZ, one of the only developed nations where moonshine is legal. Nobody bothers, though.

General Tuna :@Identity CrisisLegal moonshine? I would have thought that was a contradiction in terms, although not as much as a huge midget.

From what I've been told, it's legal to make moonshine, but only in small quantities and for personal use.

Because of its illegal nature, moonshine is rarely aged in barrels like bourbon, and it sometimes contains impurities, off flavours [sic], and toxins such as methanol.”

Methanol will blind you. I’ve also heard that moonshine is sometimes distilled in old car radiators which use lead solder and introduce that toxin as well. Also, if moonshine is a “distilled spirit,” home-brewed beer or wine wouldn’t qualify.

@Rocky: I have seen a Dodge A100 van used as a hearse. @Kerrybel: I believe Moonshine is any pure grain alcohol made in a home still, but I’m not sure if it’s all whiskey or not.

Yeah. And the order is a little off too. "First, moonshine will kill you. Then you'll be crippled and blinded."
