When I was a kid there was a Sea World in Aurora, Ohio and they had a water skiing elephant. In fact that might actually be it. I remember the pen for the elephant was right by the bleachers for the show and I used to go down there and see it. One time that thing grabbed a hold of me with it’s trunk pretty hard and scared the crap out of me.
I was there at Lake Dora when this was being filmed! My grandfather took my sister and I to see the elephant waterski. That’s something you don’t forget in a hurry.
@Lindsay Ever stop to think maybe the elephant might enjoy water-skiing? Animals enjoy the weirdest things (ie., the cat that likes surfing), so until you can read the mind of that elephant, keep your obnoxious, PETA-esque comments to yourself. You are not the Lorax. You do not speak for the trees.
inb4, “ZOMG, what if he falls in the water though?!! He’ll drown!!” (this is the type of thought progression that people like Lindsay follow…)
To that I say: You’re a fucking moron Lindsay. Elephants can swim, usually using their trunk as a snorkel.
Re: Teh_Juggs…dude. Are you kidding? The elephant is TIED to the raft. If the raft tips over, the elephant will probably drown. I hope to gawd you don’t have any pets. Go use your trunk as a snorkel, you heartless gink.
@chaetophile
The elephant isn’t tied to anything. There’s a rope around his/her (probably her) hind leg to remind her that’s where the shackle would be. And frankly, a scared elephant, no matter how well trained, would have made kindling of that entire rig before it got to that point.
this is a black & white still from the in-color, and extremely crappy, campy ’70′s movie “honky tonk freeway”. If you’ve never seen it, consider yourselves very lucky.
The very first waterskiing elephant was Sonja (pretty sure) who was a baby elephant at Sea World Ohio (Aurora) in 1972 or 1973? She had a trainer who rode with her on the skii’s the first couple of weeks until she got comfortable. How do I know this. I was one of the boat drivers/skiiers/hanglider pilots, who had the pleasure of pulling her around on the skii’s. She loved the water and was like a little kid around the stadium. We only had one incident where she came off the ski’s and went in the water. Elephants don’t swim well, but she was never in danger of drowning. I have a fantastic pic of her behind the boat at Sea World that I will try to find and post here. Trust me, she loved it!
All I can think is, “Poor elephant!”

Ok, at first I thought the French banning elephants from beaches was a pretty dumb idea. But now I can see where they were coming from.
This was from the movie “Honky Tonk Freeway.”
coolest pic ever
What’d happen is the boat suddenly stopped and the elephant kept going forward??
@Treelan
Me too.

Don’t be silly. Absolutely nothing could ever go wrong in this scenario.

We’ve gotta get a bigger boat.
According to Gary Thompson’s Water Ski Shows CV, he coordinated a water skiing elephant segment for Walt Disney’s film “Freaky Friday.
