  1. LYNX318 says:

noway, this must be shopped. The sleepers dont line up each side of the rail.

    • Gleef says:

No shop, it’s the Brennan Gyroscopic Monorail from 1909. Worked damn well, too, from what I hear.

      • taitano says:

Yup. It worked even better than Brennan had hoped. But, in the end, the idea was scrapped because even Brennan himself was afeared of the possibility of the failure of the gyros. And the gyroscopes could be easily sabotaged and otherwise damaged. The tech exists today to make hardier and more stable gyroscopes, but 70′s and 80′s aircraft advances, and 30′s and 40′s instant-runway developments make a system like this unnecessary and vulnerable in comparison.

      • Daniel says:

Aw, c’mon! LYNX318 had already corrected himself, and identified the gyroscopic monorail.

  2. LYNX318 says:

dang it did exist. the Brennan monorail with gyroscopic stabilizer from 1909.

  3. simO))) says:

someone took the monorail idea a little too seriously

  4. TheCannyScot says:

Looks like it ought to be a Coney Island ride.

  5. wombat says:

    Brennan Monorail. Used gyroscopes.

  6. DOES says:

It is an actual thing, it did work well. You can see some documentation at the National Railroad Museum in York!

    And Wikipedia :)

  7. Azrael says:

Not only did it work, it worked better and more safely than conventional trains.

  8. Mikkel says:

I read about that on Wikipedia. I believe the idea was to double rail traffic on existing tracks by having one train run on each rail. I’d love to see a working model of that thing.

  9. soubriquet says:

And if you liked Brennan’s train, how about Count Schilovski’s Gyrocar, built by Wolseley, in Britain, and his own Gyrotrain?

Count Schilovski managed to leave Russia, and went to work for Sperry Gyros in England.

  10. TonyF says:

It didn’t work as well as you might think. The precession which occurs when you turn a gyroscope around corners was a problem. (Try it with one out of the toybox)

  11. Bucky says:

Another advantage of the Unicycle Train was its quiet ride. Quiet except for the terrified screams of the passengers, I mean.

  12. Howard M Beers says:

    The ultimate in narrow-gauge railways.

  13. Lee says:

“Okay, Junior. I’ll sit on this side of the train and you sit on that side. NO! STAY THERE!!”

  14. Mad_Hatteress says:

I’ve been working on the rail-road…but then I got lazy and left at lunch with only half of the track laid.

  15. tm says:

    OMG! Call the physics police!

  16. TheAntiCat says:

    “Monorail, monorail!”

  17. Identity Crisis says:

This is a picture of my “one track” mind. One rail, a couple of wheels and a tendency to go off the track because I don’t have a gyroscope.

  18. What says:

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Monorail Cat’s most bitter rival…the “One Track Line”–where safety is the ONLY thing on our minds.

  19. the dark ferret says:

I submitted this. Thanks for the links. I didn’t know where the picture came from. Mystery solved! :)

  20. Daan says:

    MonoFAIL!

  21. MrLibearian says:

Well, sir, there’s nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!
