Is that Salvador Dali? if it is, that explains a lot.
One of the best classic WTF Pics thanks to Salvidor Dali. No photo manipulation at all, jut many many takes of throwing water and cats and hoping to get a good shot of it all
fyi, I believe this photograph of Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí was by Philippe Halsman. No optical trickery was used to create it–instead, a bucket of water and three cats were flung into the studio space while the artist jumped and the photographer took the picture. You may be able to see the fine wires suspending the easel and painting off the floor, along with the assistant holding the chair on the left. Those poor cats must have been miserable!
If anyone is wondering, this is Philippe Halsman’s “Dali Atomicus”, and that’s Salvador Dali in the picture.
Phillipe Halsman did a sort of LOL book with Dali called “Dali’s Moustache,” ostensibly an interview in which the answers are provided by amusingly captioned photographs, often heavily manipulated themselves for humor’s sake. Ex.: “What is Surrealism?” “Surrealism is myself.”, with the face of Dali himself replacing one of the melting clocks draped over a branch. Or: “Why do you paint?” “Because I love art.” With a photo of Dali, moustache arranged into an “S”, two paintbrushes making it a “$”, and the whole framed with loose coins. Some great stuff if you can find it!
That last picture you are talking about is a pun on an anagram that surrealist writer Andre Breton coined on Dali’s name: Avida Dollars. The hardcore surrealist were of the opinion that Dali threw away his ideals for lots of money when he started working in the USA in the 50′s. Dali couldn’t give a fuck, he was making money like water (and spending it like water too)…
My Dad has this book, and I used to love looking at it as a kid — very funny. You can get it at Amazon, actually — click link.
It is worth noting that this is the photo prior to retouching (that’s what they called photoshopping before Photoshop, kids). The final piece removes the wires, the support under the stepstool, and the stray arm. And a painting was inserted into the empty frame on the easel, not by pasting a copy of an existing painting, but by Dali himself painting it into the picture. (If I recall correctly, he said the mini-painting was his vision of “a cat’s nightmare.”)
Yeah that’s Salvador Dali photograph….
“Imma pickin mah nose with a stick thingeh.”
“the father of wtf”
Lol.
Anything involving Dali is WTF.
Yeah, but in such a *good* way.
“I’m not on drugs. I AM drugs.” ~Salvador Dali
The photo was done long before CGI or Photoshop for effects. That was real, not Memorex!
I believe this is what you’d call a classic!
I had a dream like this the other night, it was freakin’ weird. Dali is awesome!
This is the famous “Dali Atomicus” photo by Philippe Halsman, made in 1948. It’s wonderful how perennially popular this image has proven, repeatedly so with with every new generation of young hipsters for over 60 years now, and counting !!! Now, go look at Ansel Adams’ “‘Autumn Moon, the High Sierra from Glacier Point”, made the same year ! Black and white silver nitrate glass plate photography ROX
Wow! I’ve seen this photograph before and wondered what the title is. Many Thanks!
Photoshop is a wonderful Software, but it will never substitute Skill, Creativity and Dedication to the arts ;} And this masterpiece is one of many examples.
Oddly appropriate, considering that today is Caturday.
“Now you’re thinking with portals.”
Shopped, can tell it by the pixels. I’ve seen many shops in 50s.
Okay everyone, I think we’ve established that this is Dali….
I think we’re all shocked at “dunno source” in the caption!
@ Russian27: You’re an ignoramus. Look up Philippe Halsman’s works. Photoshop didn’t exist in 1948. Airbrushing, yes, but this is not airbrushed.
Get a clue.
@Barzuk
You might want to look up the concept of “irony”.
I did think Russian27 had tongue firmly in cheek.
Speaking of “ignoramuses”, saying that this wasn’t “airbrushed” implies that no retouching was done. In fact, there was a reasonable amount of retouching to remove the wires in the shot and some of the things holding up the props.
this isnt even the finished photograph, during editing they removed the assistants hands and added a painting to the empty easel.
somebody have hires of this picture?
well whoa
Dali was the father of the concepts that underlie just about every commercial and music video today. It would be a very boring and unimaginative world w/o Surrealism
Yet more proof that vintage weirdness is much, MUCH cooler than contemporary weirdness.
OH SHI
Everything by Salvador Dali should be on this site.
“Quit turning off the gravity!”
Now, as you can see here is the ten step process on how to re-build Rapture. Yeah we don’t fully under stand what Andrew Ryan was up to either.
