Porcupine DNA was a genetic engineering good idea that did not work.
It’s probably an offshoot of the New Primitives body art movement. Porcupine quills are pretty readily available in well-stocked piercing shops and it’s not like you can’t just collect them wherever there are porcupines. Most likely it was done just for a photo and the experience of doing it, like suspensions or Sun Dances.
It’s Chewbacca’s lesser known cousin, Sticky.
