Yup – certain eels can get that big. I doubt it was caught close to shore – this is probably where they pulled it off the boat. We used to catch stuff off Hawaii like that, although this is probably deeper in the Pacific like Truk or Tonga.
some of those fingers look awfully identical to others of those fingers. that is, do all photoshoppings qualify for pictureisunrelated status, or just those involving guys where tiaras?

They probably found it washed up on shore, dead. Oarfishes tend to end up like that.

Oarfish grow even bigger than that. I’m suprised someone caught one close to shore since they live in the abyss.
Actually, they do sometimes come to the surface at night. The weird part is that they clearly caught it during the day.

Its an oarfish! NOT a eel! they are a deep sea fish that occasionaly get washed up on shore, like what probably happened to this one. Also thay are quite rare.
