People used to do “death photos” at this period in time. There are photos with whole families where you can’t tell the corpse from the living because they’re just sitting there amongst their family members, eyes open, posed at attention. I don’t know why they did it, but it was a fairly common practice to have photos of the recently deceased, posed as if they were still alive. I have never seen one with just a skull, though.
Photography was hell expensive back then – as you surely can imagine. Plus: You had to sit/stand still for about 20 minutes until the picture was complete. So – nothing you did at a party just for fun This was an early way to remember how someone looked like, bevore he/she died – also (I believe it was in great britain) The eyes were often painted on the closed lids.
The skull is added, and not part of the original photo. It even looks photoshopped.
