That bird is not going to live very long. Tobacco smoke, and smoke of just about any kind, is lethal to birds. Whoever took this picture, you’re either a very cruel or ignorant bastard to get a bird addicted to that crap. And no, this isn’t an anti-smoking rant. It’s a pro-avian health rant. Ever hear of the canary in the coal mine? Bird lungs are very sensitive because they have to pull a lot more oxygen out of the air.
Yeah…….you really think that bird actually smoked that? First off, what makes you think the bird knows how? Second, there’s no way for that bird to get enough of a seal around the filter to actually be able to suck anything through there. Third, obviously this is either a photoshop, or a picture of opportunity, meaning that the bird probably picked the cig up, and the photographer took the pic probably right before the bird freaked and flew off after the lighter was lit. Grow up.
First, exposure to second-hand smoke is enough to cause illness and eventually death in a bird. Eventually can range from a few months to a few days, depending on secondary factors like initial health, other environmental toxins, infection setting in, etc.
Second, no context is given for the picture, except that tobacco is present and a bird is present, so I can only go by what I see and the fact that when it comes to humans it’s “hairless ape see, hairless ape do”.
Third, I don’t need to “grow up” over this. The lack of education of those that keep birds as “pets” results in an insane number of avian fatalities every year. Fatalities from ignorance are avoidable so I do my best to correct ignorance when I see it, so how about taking the time to listen and actually learn something instead of getting all bent out of shape for me having some genuine concern for the well-being of my feathered kin?
Is I first?
