I was going to respond with a “Those wacky, wacky, Japanese,” but then realized that this is no different from Katy Perry’s California Girls. Is the singer very popular in Japan or do all singers sound like an eight year old girl? Not trying to be sarcastic, it is an honest question–most of the Japanese singers I hear sound like the same girl; might be because I can’t understand what they’re singing.
It’s called harajuku. The style of looking young and innocent. It’s immensely popular in japan, and Kyary is a premier fashionista of all that is kawaii and decora. She has her own line of fake baby doll eyelashes by eyemazing. Which is what the song is all about. I kid you not. Putting on, putting on, putting on my fake eyelashes.
its mostly because of the language and most of the female singers have the same voice pitch. but each have differences in the sound of their voices that not many people that speak a different language can hear. But also depends on the genre of music it is and if its a vocaloid or not.
This singer is pretty popular right now – this song is currently #14 on the top singles chart, but those other songs you heard were probably someone else. I think this is only her second single, the other being PONPONPON, which Capt_Video posted above.
Also, bear in mind that this girl is considered wacky even by Japanese standards.
Some people like to laugh at silly things. Isn’t that the whole point of this site? Apparently you were born without a sense of humor, and I pity you for that.
That high-pitched voice is half-artificial. It’s generally considered attractive for girls/women to talk like that in Japan, so girls learn to talk in what amounts to a falsetto their whole lives. Foreign women who try to get jobs in Japan as flight attendants or operators or some other service that requires talking to customers are often required to go to classes to learn to talk like that or they can’t get the job.
Thanks, everyone for the explanations. It mainly troubled me because I have this tendency to recognize people first by their voice and their face second. (couldn’t tell you why; I just do.) So, from my POV, it was very disturbing to think that I was hearing the same girl over and over. And yes, I can tell a difference in anime singers–it’s just recently they’ve all started to sound the same.
Japanese and English use different vocal chords, so speaking in Japanese makes your voice sound higher (if you talk fluently) than when you speak in English. This is why anime voices are so freaking high pitched… It would be impossible for an American girl to sound so squeaky!
And yes, they do all sound the same, there used to be more variation in the past… Sigh. (coming from a fifteen year old) There are exceptions though!
WTF
after that i definitely believe that! that was the funniest music video I’ve ever seen! she’s like the lady gaga of japan (or are all their music video’s like that?) O.o
Might I also add that I think Japan is trying TOO hard to be weird these days. dunno, just…lacks the heart that Japanese WTFery used to have. Now theyre just being weird to be weird…sigh
I was watching this when my dad, who was sitting next to me, looked over and said “what the hell is that?”
Me: you know those Japanese movies from, like, the 50′s you like to watch?
Dad: yeah, what of it?
Me: this is what happened in the fifty years between then and now…
This is very clever indeed. Because the ‘wtf is that’ distracts you from how annoyingly repetitive the song is. Actually, no it doesn’t, it’s both wtf and incredibly repetitive and annoying.
…..I just…I just….oh my god…..I just can not find the right words to describe with my brain did while watching this. Whoa……..Japan….just WHOA! Seriously….you need an intervention here.
For all you people that think that our dear Gwen Stefani invented the “Harajuku Girl” look? Kyary here is literally the exact definition of a Harajuku Girl. She’s also got a pretty awesome personality – I met her at a small live she did for an event at an EGL boutique. She speaks English better than you’d think, though she’s definitely not fluent, and she’s very friendly and personable.
On top of it all, her songs are meant to be cute but slightly satirical, sort of framing up the extremes of the extreme cultures in Japan like ‘kawaisa’ (the barfingly cute baby-izing that pervades Japanese culture) and the various fashion trends in Harajuku at the moment (you’d probably not believe the seriousness with which they believe in false eyelashes; there are entire shops devoted to them).
There’s a lot of ‘only in Japan’ feelings in the comments, but the truth is she -knows- she looks whacky. Rather than trying to hard to be original like Gaga, Kyary is trying to play up to the fashions that are already present, making anthems for themes that are present but sort of quietly accepted in Japanese society.
I don’t like pop period, but given the choice between American and euro-pop or J-pop and K-pop I know which one I’d rather see. Part of that being that Japanese and Korean stars are usually more attractive, but the biggest factor is I can’t understand the lyrics so annoyingly repetitive is slightly less grating.
tose are some kick ass dancers. even though the mind RAICHUing imagry is permanantly impmlanted into my brain, i still remember the moves those guys did.
That, right there, was the strangest four-minutes and thirty-one seconds of my year, as of now. I couldn’t look away, I couldn’t do… anything, except go WTF over and over again… I mean, judging from the comments, she sorta like a semi-lady-gaga of Japan, but that was was still weird, although oddly interesting. Not as barfingly-cute as usual, just enough for me to tolerate…
man i hate those kinds of japanese vidoes they scare me, but on the other hand look at this, this is is real voice and all of it is writtien by herself, her name is YUI. ( sounds like im trying to promote her hahaha)
I have no problem with this video OR PonPonPon. I think they’re both beautiful, and very artistic.
No, I am not being sarcastic, or trolling. I genuinely like them.
well thats 4 1/2 minutes of my life im not getting back…
Japanese ripoff of Kanye West’s “power”.
^ true
I didn’t realize Kanye was talking about false eyelashes (yes, that is what the song is about).
except kanye’s was a blatantly transparent “ooh! look at how cool I am! I have soooo many women all over meeeeee”
Sopa violations: Kane west, Alice in wonderland, lady gaga.
stop compairing kyary to a dumb kanye west song, not cool.
Only if Lady Gaga was this good.
^ Exactly my thoughts. The woman’s voice in this vid… Far easier on the ears. Music is catchy too.
No one gives a s**t about Kanye West.
That out of the way, those lions have some serious moves.
I liked pon pon better
where can i see that?
Here you go!
i need to be a lot higher to watch this again
OMFG did i just see a black grandma chimmy in the back?
She straight up farts art design at 1:30
1:25 Kraft Mac and Cheese. No joke.
this is a weeaboo/wapanese’s wet dream.
the lion on the right seems into it, but the one on the left is just experimenting.
thanks. i had enough japan for today-
Oh dear god. You had to link that video. You just had to. I’ve seen it too many times now to care if I watch it once more… *sigh*
Thank you, Robinis. Now my coworkers think I’m insane.
What? Nyancat is evolving!
ILLUMINATI

and
why would I want to see more of that.
I didn’t have you in mind specifically when I posted it. I’ll be more careful next time.
why would anyone wanna see more of that.
Some people like to laugh at silly things. Isn’t that the whole point of this site? Apparently you were born without a sense of humor, and I pity you for that.
Well some people like bad music…

It is a proven fact that drugs are 2x stronger in Japan
WTF

Meanwhile, in LCD-land…
Liquid Crystal Display land? I believe you intended to say “lysergic acid diethylamide-land” or ‘LSD-land’.
Japan has strict drug laws and even a single pill will land you in jail for years.
But it’s not like they need drugs to be insane anyway.
I like the dancing lions ^-^
dear japan,
WHAT THE CRICKEY OSTRICHE F**K IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?!?!?!
sincerely, the rest of the world
whatever the case, those dudes in the lion suits can DAY-unce
No body f**king says DAY-unce anymore you f**king dunce.
I do
I think they’re girls O_o..
I really don’t know where I’m going here.. it’s already hard to tell when they have no costumes.. (Talking about all the japanese/korean pop culture).
Might I also add that I think Japan is trying TOO hard to be weird these days. dunno, just…lacks the heart that Japanese WTFery used to have. Now theyre just being weird to be weird…sigh
Japan is trying too hard? Have you not seen US pop lately? Japan has a long way to go before they catch up.
I was watching this when my dad, who was sitting next to me, looked over and said “what the hell is that?”
Me: you know those Japanese movies from, like, the 50′s you like to watch?

Unbelievable win
I can fap to this
Japan… Japan… The drug depository of the world apparently
Oh, god. I can’t look away…must…aaaaagh MY EYES!
I have the weirdest boner right now.
If you look very carefully, you’ll see that the lions are fake.
^this
And that, children, is what happens when you take drugs!
I’ve got the weirdest boner right now……..
Some one already said that!
Not sure if intro to children’s show
Or just J-pop
This is very clever indeed. Because the ‘wtf is that’ distracts you from how annoyingly repetitive the song is. Actually, no it doesn’t, it’s both wtf and incredibly repetitive and annoying.
The chorus sound like she is saying, “too gay, my too gay, my too gay, am I to gay?” To which I answer, “Yes, but not as gay as Twilight.”
WIN
Seriously, wtf is wrong with Japan?
I was expecting that too. Thank the Japanese gods.
Dear internets: please make this into a screensaver. The world needs it.
DUDE! I’M TRIPPIN’ BALLZ RIGHT NOW!
That book from the beginning looked like the books from zatch bell
3:10 that is all
at the end with the book with hands? and eyes in its palms?…
DO A BARREL ROLL!
it’s japanese lady gaga
Aww.. Japan. You’re so adorable. The would would be a mighty boring place without you! <3
the lions had the swag. until i saw that they were men in bras, or unbelievably flat chested women. Can they possibly be that small to need a bra?
oh god, destroy it now!!!
That’s the prettiest crack-head I’ve ever seen.
pause on 3:10 and there you go..
One day, there is going to be a reckoning, and Japan will finally have to explain itself.
…..I just…I just….oh my god…..I just can not find the right words to describe with my brain did while watching this. Whoa……..Japan….just WHOA! Seriously….you need an intervention here.

Hello, this is brain.
What the IVYSAUR did you just watch?
If you wanna hear good Japanese music, listen to this singer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHHLfhZ7j7A&feature=related
Nice terminated account there.
Darn sony always deletes her (YUI’s) videos, i’ll post another one then.

if you excuse me, I’m going to go look up and English translated version of this to find out wtf she just said.
tose are some kick ass dancers. even though the mind RAICHUing imagry is permanantly impmlanted into my brain, i still remember the moves those guys did.
MEANWHILE, in the Japanese LSD factory…
That, right there, was the strangest four-minutes and thirty-one seconds of my year, as of now. Either way, I have no idea what just happened.
Dear Japan,

I have no problem with this video OR PonPonPon. I think they’re both beautiful, and very artistic.
