I was going to respond with a “Those wacky, wacky, Japanese,” but then realized that this is no different from Katy Perry’s California Girls. Is the singer very popular in Japan or do all singers sound like an eight year old girl? Not trying to be sarcastic, it is an honest question–most of the Japanese singers I hear sound like the same girl; might be because I can’t understand what they’re singing.

    • Pioko Mew says:

It’s called harajuku. The style of looking young and innocent. It’s immensely popular in japan, and Kyary is a premier fashionista of all that is kawaii and decora. She has her own line of fake baby doll eyelashes by eyemazing. Which is what the song is all about. I kid you not. Putting on, putting on, putting on my fake eyelashes.

    • Naes says:

its mostly because of the language and most of the female singers have the same voice pitch. but each have differences in the sound of their voices that not many people that speak a different language can hear. But also depends on the genre of music it is and if its a vocaloid or not.

    • RS says:

This singer is pretty popular right now – this song is currently #14 on the top singles chart, but those other songs you heard were probably someone else. I think this is only her second single, the other being PONPONPON, which Capt_Video posted above.

Also, bear in mind that this girl is considered wacky even by Japanese standards.

    • Bacteriophage says:

That high-pitched voice is half-artificial. It’s generally considered attractive for girls/women to talk like that in Japan, so girls learn to talk in what amounts to a falsetto their whole lives. Foreign women who try to get jobs in Japan as flight attendants or operators or some other service that requires talking to customers are often required to go to classes to learn to talk like that or they can’t get the job.

    • ThatJeff says:

Thanks, everyone for the explanations. It mainly troubled me because I have this tendency to recognize people first by their voice and their face second. (couldn’t tell you why; I just do.) So, from my POV, it was very disturbing to think that I was hearing the same girl over and over. And yes, I can tell a difference in anime singers–it’s just recently they’ve all started to sound the same.

    • Scone says:

Japanese and English use different vocal chords, so speaking in Japanese makes your voice sound higher (if you talk fluently) than when you speak in English. This is why anime voices are so freaking high pitched… It would be impossible for an American girl to sound so squeaky!
And yes, they do all sound the same, there used to be more variation in the past… Sigh. (coming from a fifteen year old) There are exceptions though!

  25. Kelly says:

This is very clever indeed. Because the ‘wtf is that’ distracts you from how annoyingly repetitive the song is. Actually, no it doesn’t, it’s both wtf and incredibly repetitive and annoying.

  26. Mecord says:

  41. Hess says:

…..I just…I just….oh my god…..I just can not find the right words to describe with my brain did while watching this. Whoa……..Japan….just WHOA! Seriously….you need an intervention here.

  42. TheDeathBunnie says:

For all you people that think that our dear Gwen Stefani invented the “Harajuku Girl” look? Kyary here is literally the exact definition of a Harajuku Girl. She’s also got a pretty awesome personality – I met her at a small live she did for an event at an EGL boutique. She speaks English better than you’d think, though she’s definitely not fluent, and she’s very friendly and personable.

On top of it all, her songs are meant to be cute but slightly satirical, sort of framing up the extremes of the extreme cultures in Japan like ‘kawaisa’ (the barfingly cute baby-izing that pervades Japanese culture) and the various fashion trends in Harajuku at the moment (you’d probably not believe the seriousness with which they believe in false eyelashes; there are entire shops devoted to them).

There’s a lot of ‘only in Japan’ feelings in the comments, but the truth is she -knows- she looks whacky. Rather than trying to hard to be original like Gaga, Kyary is trying to play up to the fashions that are already present, making anthems for themes that are present but sort of quietly accepted in Japanese society.

  43. your brain says:

    Hello, this is brain.
What the IVYSAUR did you just watch?

  44. Hazer says:

If you wanna hear good Japanese music, listen to this singer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHHLfhZ7j7A&feature=related

  45. Liam Phoenix says:

I don’t like pop period, but given the choice between American and euro-pop or J-pop and K-pop I know which one I’d rather see. Part of that being that Japanese and Korean stars are usually more attractive, but the biggest factor is I can’t understand the lyrics so annoyingly repetitive is slightly less grating.

  46. themostepicnameintheworld says:

if you excuse me, I’m going to go look up and English translated version of this to find out wtf she just said.

  47. john says:

  48. Cheif_Pwnsanoob says:

MEANWHILE, in the Japanese LSD factory…

  49. Kaliedo says:

That, right there, was the strangest four-minutes and thirty-one seconds of my year, as of now. I couldn’t look away, I couldn’t do… anything, except go WTF over and over again… I mean, judging from the comments, she sorta like a semi-lady-gaga of Japan, but that was was still weird, although oddly interesting. Not as barfingly-cute as usual, just enough for me to tolerate…

Either way, I have no idea what just happened.

  50. Scone says:

    Dear Japan,
    Wtf
