I don’t get it, either.
Well, I think it /is/ just a girl, but many Japanese horror stories/games use young girls in kimonos as the scar factor. Take Fatal Frame for an example. That one ALWAYS has at least one young girl in a kimono who scares the snot out of you. Though in FF just about everyone is in a kimono. Other than that, I can’t tell if she’s anything special, or just some girl in a kimono that someone altered. that help any?
Well I don’t get it either… Its not frightening at all, in fact she’s kind of cute, but the more I stared at it I got pretty scared because it was supposed to be frightening but I didn’t know why. I don’t really get it but all I know is the more I wondered the more it scared me, I guess its because human beings are always afraid of what they don’t understand. But yeah, that’s my guess.

I’m really not sure here, but I think if you look hard at her face she seems to waver and move very ghost-like. This may be an optical illusion. I really don’t know what else it could be.

It’s an animated GIF. If you stare at it long enough, the eyes move and she’s looking at you. Then she looks away again. And so on. It gets pretty creepy.
So I didn’t think this picture was creepy at all, but since you’ve said that I am for some reason to terrified to look. I guess it might be because of the fact that it’s pitch black in my room right now.

Seems like it’s meant to be more of a psychological horror than the shock-horror of modern times. Maybe.
That’s generally the idea with asian/japanese “horror.” It’s not what you see, but your perception that is influenced by what you don’t see or briefly see; the other senses pick up and heighten it.
yeah again as I said to the person above, I’m tired of people going on about how presumably Japanese horror is more “subtle,” etc. Ever watch guro?
